Complete Export Training Package

The Zero to Export program was conceived on the need to fill the identified gaps in enhancing the capacity of exporting community, which led to the introduction of a practical approach involving field/ hands on training and mentoring to meet the yearnings of certain category of would be exporters. The programme is run in partnership with Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC). In developing the training programme, the Institute has taken into consideration the need to develop the youth to join the community of exporters within the shortest possible duration and at the least cost. This involves making the training as relevant and practical as possible and not longer than necessary by giving them specific exportable products focus. By the end of the course, the graduating participant will have been assisted to elaborate their business plans and establish their own export company and start business - this activity being part of the last phase of the training programme.

The objectives of the programme as listed below

  • To develop the capacity of would be exporters in practical terms in all the stages of exporting as it relates to product(s) of interest.
  • To provide insight to all processes required to arrive at taking export decisions.
  • To introduce the would-be –exporters to the nitty-gritty of logistics involved in export.
  • To enable participants take an informed decision on product(s) for export.

The course is arranged in 4 phases:

Phase I: Foundation course (2 weeks)

This covers what every exporter must know irrespective of the kind of product the potential exporter intends to deal in.

Phase II: Product-focused courses (1 week)

These are presented in modules around selected exportable products. Participants will be required to choose the product they wish to deal in and take that course. Some of the product modules initially cover includes: Palm produce, Commodities: (such as Cocoa beans, cashew, sesame seeds, natural rubber, shea butter), Yam, Plantain, Fish and fishery products, Handicraft, Textiles and garments, Horticultural products, Services.

Phase III: Practicals (1 week)

This phase is in the form of attachment to certain successful export firms for in-service training. This activity will provide the opportunity to the participants to gain an on-the-job practical experience in an export firm.

Phase IV: Export enterprise

Participants setting up their own export firms based on the business plans they have elaborated. The young export firms will be monitored and assisted as required to help them to succeed.
